ABOUT ME
Let’s work together to educate people about healthcare options
Hi, I'm Karen, your resident sociologist and healthcare expert.
I’ve built a career studying how inequality shows up in our healthcare systems. For the past decade, I’ve focused why our lived experiences of death and dying are so often at odds with healthcare ideals, and how we can improve. I’m currently writing a book on this topic and sharing what I have learned.

I’m On A Mission to Help Patients and Caregivers Get Better Care
Based on 25+ years of research, I can help you spot the cultural, healthcare, and policy bottlenecks that cause problems in end-of-life healthcare and help you translate them into tailored action—even while you are healthy.
How It All Started
After being a caregiver for my own mother when she died of cancer, I realized how much important information was not getting into the hands of people who needed it most.
For years, I published my research results in academic journals. I went to academic conferences and spoke with other academics. I wanted to get the information into the hands of people who needed it the most, but I wasn’t sure how to do it.
Then my mom got sick and I had a front-row seat from the caregiver side of things. I knew I had to change my strategy if I was going to help. I started researching end-of-life care, and now I am writing a book geared toward everyday patients and families trying to use healthcare.
